An Hour of Hallowed Peace | Monthly Melody Discussion

      Did you get to listen to our Monthly Melody yet? An Hour of Hallowed Peace is such a beautiful hymn, and I love this arrangement of it. It is so peaceful!! Whether or not you try to learn the song, at least go and listen to this beautiful piece. And you may just decide that you want to listen to it again and then learn it before you know it! Okay, let’s discuss this hymn a little bit, and then at the bottom of the post, you can hear it for yourself.

There is an hour of hallowed peace
For those with care oppressed,
When sighs and tears for aye shall cease,
And all be hushed to rest.

     For some reason, I got the impression that this song was talking about prayer. I have realized that it’s talking about the hope of Heaven, but I think both can apply.

     We will be at perfect rest when we get to Heaven. There we shall be forever at rest from sin, struggles, and sadness.

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Revelation 21:4

     This is a beautiful hope that God has given us! While we have the hope of perfect rest and fellowship with the Lord in Heaven, we also have access to a foretaste here on earth. When we pray, we communicate with our Heavenly Father. We can also seek His strength to do His will.

     In this way, we can receive rest by relying on the Lord’s strength instead of our own feeble, inadequate attempts.

‘Tis when the soul is freed from fears
And doubts that here annoy;
Then they that oft have sown in tears
Shall reap again in joy.

     When do we find rest and peace? It is when we are free from fear and doubt. This comes from having faith in the Lord. We must seek the Lord in prayer, asking Him to give us faith. As we pray and see Him work in our lives, He uses that to strengthen our faith in Him.

     On earth, we will continue to be bombarded by fears and doubts and have to keep fighting them in God’s strength. Aren’t you glad that we will one day be completely free from those temptations when we reach Heaven?

For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

Psalm 30:5

     When we reach Heaven, our tears will be traded for joy. We will begin to more clearly see the results of our toils. Imagine meeting someone there and knowing that they are there in part because you faced your fears and witnessed to them or because you wrestled in prayer for their lost soul.

     Let’s be encouraged to labor in God’s kingdom, knowing that we won’t fully realize how God has used us until we get to Heaven!

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 15:58

There is a home of sweet repose,
Where storms assail no more;
The stream of endless pleasure flows
On that celestial shore.

     These are beautiful, restful words. In this life, we face a lot of hard things. There is temptation to battle against, trials to walk through, plus the daily irritatons of life that can wear us down.

    But this isn’t the end of our story! Our future as Christians is bright. This world is not our home, and one day we will arrive home, never to face another trial, temptation, or discouragement.

For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

Hebrews 11:10

     This verse is about Abraham. He governed his life on earth by keeping the eternal city in view. This is also the way we should live – with our eyes on the future and hope in our hearts. If we do this, we will be able to rejoice now, even in the midst of difficulties, because of what is ahead.

There purity with love appears,
And bliss without alloy;
There they that oft had sown in tears
Shall reap eternal joy.

     Can you imagine a place where everyone loves each other perfectly out of a pure heart? And most importantly, everyone there will love God perfectly. This – this is truly bliss that cannot be marred.

They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him. Psalm 126:5-6

     My friend, can I leave you with a challenge today? Not everyone is on their way to Heaven. Not everyone has the hope that we do. Would you ask the Lord to give you opportunities to help others find Jesus?

     It’s not always easy, and there may be times when you sow in tears. But that will seem as nothing when you arrive in Heaven and see the sheaves, the precious souls, you helped to bring. If you ask the Lord sincerely for opportunities, He will be faithful to give them to you!

  1. Favorite verse would be:
    ‘Tis when the soul is freed from fears
    And doubts that here annoy;
    Then they that oft have sown in tears
    Shall reap again in joy.

    Reminds me of the promise in Revelations 21:4 as it says, “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” ? What a blessed hope we have!!

  2. Yes, we have the most wonderful hope possible, Rachel!! I’m so thankful that in a world of chaos, turmoil, sin, and misery, we can still have perfect peace, Jesus the Prince of Peace, in our hearts! So we have hope even in the midst of trouble, plus the reality that one day all the trouble will be completely over and we will live forever with Jesus.

    We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, For the HOPE which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel. Colossians 1:3-5
