Something For Thee | Monthly Melody

     Have you been joining me in listening to our Monthly Melody?   I hope so because it’s a wonderful one!!  Something For Thee has beautiful words and music, and I love the singing in this recording.

     As usual, let’s look at this hymn verse by verse, a few lines at a time.  It helps you get at the meaning better when you divide it up and think about one part at a time.

Something For Thee

Savior, Thy dying love
Thou gavest me,
Nor should I aught withhold,
Dear Lord, from Thee:
In love my soul would bow,
My heart fulfill its vow,
Some off’ring bring Thee now,
Something for Thee.

     Jesus gave us His perfect love and displayed it in an incomparable way when He died for us.  He, the sinless, holy Son of God took our sins and laid down His own life for the creation that He had made.  There has never been nor will there ever again be such a loving sacrifice as this. 

     While Jesus was suffering on the cross, He was yet full of love for sinful man, asking His Father to forgive his persecutors since they didn’t know what they were doing.  What love is this!

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.   

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 

Isaiah 53:4-5

Nor should I aught withhold,
Dear Lord, from Thee:

     After all that Jesus has done for us, giving us His all, how can we do less?  But the truth is, many of us struggle and hold back.  We are afraid that if we surrender completely, God will call us to do hard things. 

     After Jesus has shown us His love in such an amazing way, can we not trust in the truth that He will not ask us to do anything hard unless it is best?  And not only that, but He will be the one to give us the strength to do it.  Let’s stop holding back, and give everything to Jesus, trusting it to His strong loving hands!!

In love my soul would bow,

Some off’ring bring Thee now,
Something for Thee.

     Picture this.  You are inside a burning house on the second floor.  The stairs are ablaze.  Not only that, but you are crippled, and there is no way for you to get out.  You know that death is staring you in the face, and you are helpless to resist.  Suddenly someone rushes through the flames and smoke, throws a blanket over your head to protect you, snatches you off your feet, and staggers back down the stairs with you and out into the open air.  Your life has been saved!  

     What would be your reaction after this?  Would you not thank this person with all of your heart?  Of course they were burned and suffered for what they did for you.  You would be forever in their debt and want to do all that you could for them.  As often as you could, you would thank them and try to show your appreciation for them giving you back your life. 

     Jesus has done far more for us than this!  When we were hopelessly crippled by sin and our souls were dead, He gave His life so that we could be spiritually brought to life.  The most natural response to this should be a desire to do everything we can to show our love and gratitude.  

At the blest mercy seat,
Pleading for me,                                                                                                                                                                                        My feeble faith looks up,
Jesus, to Thee:
Help me the cross to bear,
Thy wondrous love declare,
Some song to raise, or pray’r,
Something for Thee.

     Jesus not only gave His life for us, but He is still actively involved in our lives.  The Bible says that He lives to intercede for us.  Because of His sacrifice on the cross, He can come before His Father and present His perfect record in place of ours when we ask Him for forgiveness.

Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Hebrews 7:25

My feeble faith looks up,
Jesus, to Thee:

     Aren’t you thankful that God honors feeble faith?  Sometimes when life is hard, it’s not easy to have faith in the Lord working everything out for good.  But if we look to Him with all the faith we have and strength for more, He will do the rest!  The important thing is that our faith is put in the right place: in trusting Jesus.

Help me the cross to bear,
Thy wondrous love declare,
Some song to raise, or pray’r,
Something for Thee.

     This section of the verse lists off a few of the ways that we can serve the Lord out of gratitude for what He has done for us.  In His strength we can daily take up our cross and follow Him.  This means patiently accepting what He brings our way and not complaining about it but trusting that He knows best.  We can also spread His love to others around us in word and deed.  All of this can be done with a prayer in our hearts and a song on our lips!

Give me a faithful heart,
Likeness to Thee,
That each departing day
Henceforth may see
Some work of love begun,
Some deed of kindness done,
Some wand’rer sought and won,
Something for Thee.

     Aren’t you thankful for the Lord’s faithfulness?  I surely am!  It’s so wonderful to know that each new day He will be there ready to love me and provide for my needs afresh.  He keeps the seasons in their times, the planets in their places, and He takes care of each one of us.  What a blessing that our God is consistent!

It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.  They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23

     God also wants to make us faithful so that we can be available for those around us who need us.
That each departing day
Henceforth may see
Some work of love begun,
Some deed of kindness done,
Some wand’rer sought and won,
Something for Thee.

     When we are faithfully doing what the Lord asks of us, then He will give us opportunities to serve.  Opportunities come in all shapes and sizes.  They could be taking the time to play with a sibling, cooking a meal for our family, or something as simple as smiling at someone.  It doesn’t have to be big and difficult to be important in the Lord’s sight.

And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

Matthew 10:42

All that I am and have,
Thy gifts so free,
In joy, in grief, thro’ life,
Dear Lord, for Thee!
And when Thy face I see,
My ransom’d soul shall be,
Thro’ all eternity,
Something for Thee.

     It’s true!  Everything that we have is a gift from God.  This beautiful world that we live in, sunshine and flowers, our families, even life itself, and most especially salvation are all gifts that God gives to us freely.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

James 1:17

     And because our lives are God’s gifts to us, we in turn should give them back to Him.  What does He want from us?  He wants us!  He wants us to give ourselves back to Him out of gratitude for all He has done for us.  Then, on the good days and on the hard, in this life and in the next one for all eternity, we can be His and live for Him!!
